Surviving the Holidays When You’re Grieving
The hardest part of grieving during the holidays might be how loudly everything around you insists on being merry. The music, the lights, the question are you ready for Christmas. And inside, there is an empty chair that everyone can see and no one quite knows how to mention.
If you are quietly dreading this season, you are not ungrateful and you are not doing grief wrong. You are just loving someone who is not here the way they used to be. Let this be the one place that does not ask you to perform joy you do not feel yet.
Permission to Grieve in a Season That Expects Joy
Matthew 5:4 does not say blessed are those who move on quickly. It says blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. There is a blessing attached to the mourning itself. Psalm 34:18 promises God is closest now, in the crushed-spirit season, not after you have pulled yourself together for the party.
Psalm 147:3 says He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds, and Lamentations 3:22-23 promises His mercies are new every morning, including the mornings you wake up and remember all over again.
Gentle Ways to Get Through
You are allowed to do the holidays differently this year. Skip the event that is too much. Keep the one tradition that comforts you and let the others rest. Say their name out loud instead of tiptoeing around it. John 16:22 holds the long hope that your grief will one day turn to a joy no one can take, but you do not have to feel that yet. Today you just have to get through today.

A Short Prayer for Grieving Through the Holidays
Father, this season hurts in a way I cannot hide. Thank You that You call the mourning blessed and promise to be near the brokenhearted. Carry me through the days I am dreading. Let me grieve honestly and still catch small glimpses of Your comfort. Amen.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I cope with grief during the holidays as a Christian?
Give yourself permission to do the season differently, keeping comforting traditions and letting go of what is too much. Lean on Scripture like Matthew 5:4 and Psalm 34:18, and take the holidays one day at a time rather than bracing for all of them at once.
What Bible verse helps with grief at Christmas?
Psalm 34:18 is a gentle anchor: God is close to the brokenhearted. Matthew 5:4 also reassures that those who mourn are blessed and will be comforted.
Is it okay to not feel joyful during the holidays?
Yes. Grief does not pause for the calendar. Scripture never demands performed joy. It makes room for honest mourning and promises God’s nearness in the middle of it.
