Forgiveness: A Christian’s Guide to Letting Go Without Losing Yourself
Forgiveness might be the hardest thing Jesus ever asked of us. We know we’re supposed to do it, and yet we lie awake replaying the thing they said, the thing they did, the apology that never came. If you’re carrying something heavy, this is the page that walks you through all of it, gently.
Let’s start with a truth that sets a lot of us free: forgiveness isn’t a feeling you wait for. It’s a decision you make, often again and again, while your feelings are still catching up.
What the Bible actually says about forgiveness
Colossians 3:13 tells us to forgive as the Lord forgave us, and Ephesians 4:31-32 to get rid of bitterness and be kind and tenderhearted. Notice it doesn’t say the other person has to earn it first. Forgiveness flows from what God has already poured into you. It’s a command, which is actually good news, because God never commands a feeling, only a choice you can make with His help.
Set down what you keep carrying
The Emotional Healing Workbook walks you through releasing the hurt with Scripture and gentle prompts, so forgiveness becomes something you actually feel, not just something you know you should do.
Forgiveness is a gift to your own body, too
This isn’t only spiritual. The Mayo Clinic notes that letting go of grudges is tied to healthier relationships, lower anxiety and stress, and fewer symptoms of depression. Bitterness is a backpack of rocks you carry to every room. Setting it down frees more than your spirit.
Start with the hardest person: yourself
For a lot of women, the person they can’t forgive is the one in the mirror. You can believe God’s forgiven you and still carry the shame like a weight you forgot to put down. If that’s you, begin with Forgiving Yourself: Bible Verses to Let Go of the Past.
Forgiving someone who isn’t sorry
Jesus modeled the hardest version of this. From the cross, in Luke 23:34, He prayed “Father, forgive them,” over people who were still mocking Him. Romans 12:19 lets you hand the case to a Judge who sees everything, so forgiving an unrepentant person isn’t letting them win. It’s getting out of the courtroom yourself.
Forgiveness is not the same as reconciliation
Here’s the freedom so many of us never got told: you can forgive someone completely and still be wise about how close you let them stand. Forgiveness releases the past. Trust is rebuilt slowly, if at all, based on changed behavior. The full distinction is in Forgiveness vs Reconciliation: Can You Forgive Without Reconciling?.
Forgiving your family
Family wounds are their own category, and the holidays press right on them. For the relationships closest to home, see How to Forgive Your Family Before the Holidays, and for the tender question of distance, Is It a Sin to Go No Contact With Family?.
A short prayer to forgive
Father, You know every rock I’ve been carrying. I don’t fully feel like forgiving yet, but I’m willing, and I’m asking You to do in my heart what I can’t do on my own. Help me set this down, soften the bitterness, guard my peace, and free me to walk forward with open hands. Amen.
