Bible Verses for a Struggling Marriage: Hope for a Hard Season
Hey friend.
Nobody stands at the altar picturing this part. The silence at dinner. The same argument on a loop. The roommate feeling, where you share an address but not much else.
If your marriage is in a hard season, I’m not going to hand you a tidy little verse and a bow. But I do want to sit with you here for a minute, because a struggling marriage is not automatically a failing one.
A hard season is not the same as the end
Here is a picture that helped me. A marriage in a rough stretch is a lot like a garden in winter.
On top it looks brown and bare and kind of dead. But underground, the roots are still alive, still holding, just resting. Winter is not the garden dying. It is the garden waiting for spring.
Some marriages really are in winter, not the grave. The question is whether both of you are willing to keep tending the soil.
Bible verses for a struggling marriage
Read these slow, and let them pray for you when you do not have the words. Click through to sit with each one.
Ecclesiastes 4:12 says a cord of three strands is not quickly broken. Picture your marriage as a braid with God woven in as the third strand. Two strands fray. Three hold.
1 Corinthians 13:4-7 reminds us love is patient and kind, that it keeps no record of wrongs. On the days the feelings are gone, this is love as a choice, not a mood.
Colossians 3:13-14 tells us to bear with each other and forgive, and to put on love which binds everything together. Forgiveness is the thread that keeps a marriage from unraveling thread by thread.
Ephesians 4:2-3 calls us to be humble, gentle, and patient, bearing with one another in love. Sometimes the most spiritual thing you can do is simply not say the cruel thing you could.
1 Peter 4:8 says above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins. Not ignores. Covers. Like a blanket over someone who is cold.
Romans 12:12 says be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer. When you do not know how to fix it, you can still pray through it.
A gentle but important word
Hear me carefully, sis. Everything here is for a marriage that is hard, not one that is harmful.
If there is abuse in your home, God is not asking you to stay in harm’s way to prove your faith. Your safety matters to Him. Please reach out to a pastor, a counselor, or a domestic violence hotline. Staying safe is not a lack of faith. It is wisdom.
A hurting marriage can leave your own heart depleted. Tend to you, too.

Should I stay in a marriage that feels loveless?
