5 Ways to Welcome The Spirit Into Your Everyday Life
Striving for God?
Yup! We all do it, even though His love isn’t something we have to earn…
…and yet, we feel like we don’t know how to truly sit in a free grace that costs us nothing. It feels absurd, wonky, and a bit too good to be true.
But here’s the thing, it’s true.
And if you’re struggling with overcoming a heart that’s bent a bit more toward striving and perfection when it comes to accepting and leaning into His love, it’s high time we get back to basics of our faith in order to start living free and on purpose for our good and His glory!
Ready?!
First things first, we’ll explore the importance of inviting the Holy Spirit into your life, how to overcome obstacles that may hinder your spiritual progress, practical steps for inviting the Holy Spirit into your daily routine, and most importantly, how to sustain your new rhythms to keep nourishing your soul!
Power from the Spirit
For all those led by God’s Spirit are God’s sons. For you did not receive a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear. Instead, you received the Spirit of adoption, by whom we cry out, “Abba, Father!”
I believe inviting the Holy Spirit into your life can be the key to unlocking your spiritual growth and undoing the lies the enemy has weaved into our head and heart spaces.
It’s time to ditch the empty faith cliches marketed to us, and put on the full armor of God which is capable and purposeful to guard our hearts and minds in Christ Jesus!
The Importance of Welcoming the Holy Spirit
As we undo what’s not working in our faith walk, our natural first step will be to reunite with the Spirit we were given upon our adoption into the Kingdom by way of baptism.
As a reminder (sometimes I need to be told the truth when I’m wrestling against lies), the Holy Spirit is our helper and guide. Jesus promised His disciples that the Holy Spirit would be with them forever and lead them into all truth (John 14:16-17, 16:13).
By welcoming the Holy Spirit into our lives, we open ourselves up to His wisdom and guidance to create an environment that is welcoming to God’s presence in our homes and souls.
Okay, but how do we really do this, Monet? How do we lean into the truth and wisdom of the Spirit?
Overcoming Obstacles to Welcoming the Holy Spirit
I get it, friend, making our home welcoming to God can be challenging, especially when we’re faced with competing demands and distractions in our everyday lives.
Here are three common obstacles that can prevent us from welcoming the Holy Spirit, along with some practical tips for overcoming them:
1. Feeling Overwhelmed and Unsure of Where to Start
If you’re feeling overwhelmed and unsure about how to prioritize your faith and nurture your soul, you’re not alone.
Many of us struggle to balance both our spiritual and practical responsibilities, and it can be difficult to know where to start, when, and if we’re even capable of accomplishing sustaining rhythms when we feel so cluttered.
My advice: start small and be intentional about carving out time for prayer, meditation, and reflection.
Whether it’s a few minutes in the morning or before bed, creating a consistent devotional or prayer practice can help anchor your day and keep you focused on the spiritual rhythms you’re creating with the Father.
2. Struggling to Create a Consistent Devotional or Prayer Practice
Creating a consistent devotional or prayer practice that fits into your busy schedule can feel overwhelming…hence, my tip above (start small).
Next, consider exploring different devotionals or podcasts that can help you stay on track with your simple steps.

3. Feeling Stuck or Stagnant in the Spiritual Growth Journey
If you’re feeling stuck or stagnant in your spiritual growth journey, it’s important to remember that growth takes time and patience.
Don’t be discouraged if you feel like you’re not making progress as quickly as you’d like. Instead, focus on cultivating a heart of gratitude and surrendering to God’s plan for your life, instead of your own.
Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal areas where you can grow and change, and be open to His guidance and direction for He is faithful to lead with truth!
The Nitty Gritty: How to Welcome the Holy Spirit into Your Everyday Life
Now that we’ve explored some common obstacles to welcoming the Holy Spirit, let’s talk about practical steps for inviting the Holy Spirit into your everyday life:
Practical Steps for Inviting the Holy Spirit
When it comes to inviting the Holy Spirit into your life, prayer is one of the most important practices you can cultivate. Starting your day with worship sets the tone for the rest of the day and helps you to focus your mind and heart on God. Here are some practical steps you can take to make prayer a daily habit:
Set aside time each day:
Make it a priority to set aside a few minutes each day for prayer. Whether in the morning, during your lunch break, or in the evening, choose a time that works best for you and stick to it.
Prioritizing the time you meet with God every day, outside of your continual prayer time, anchors your soul to what is true and unchanging in this world.
Find a quiet place:
Choose a quiet place where you can be alone with God and minimize distractions. This could be a corner of your room, a park bench, or any other location where you feel comfortable and at peace.
When we designate a place(s) where we’d like to meet with God, over time, we condition our body and mind to surrender, listen, and breathe in the Spirit with intention.
Use a prayer guide or journal:
Consider using a prayer guide or journal to help you focus your thoughts and prayers. There are many resources available online or at your local Christian bookstore that can provide you with guidance and inspiration.

Be honest with God:
Don’t be afraid to be honest with God about your struggles, fears, and doubts. He already knows what’s on your heart, but expressing it to Him can help you to process your emotions and find peace.
Listen for His voice:
Prayer is not just about talking to God, but also about listening for His voice. Take time to be still and quiet before Him, and ask Him to speak to you through His Holy Spirit.
By starting your day with prayer and following these practical steps, you can create a daily habit of inviting the Holy Spirit into your life and experiencing His transformative power. Remember, prayer is not a one-time event, but a lifelong journey of deepening your relationship with God.
Sustaining Your Relationship with the Holy Spirit
Because inviting the Holy Spirit into your life is just the beginning of a lifelong journey of deepening your relationship with God, here are some tips for sustaining your relationship with the Holy Spirit:
Study the Bible
The Bible is God’s word and the Holy Spirit uses it to speak to us and guide us in our daily lives. Make it a priority to study the Bible regularly and apply its teachings to your life.
Choose a study method of studying the Bible, including verse-by-verse, chapter-by-chapter, and topical studies. Choose a plan that works best for you and helps you to engage with the text.
Consider using study resources like commentaries, concordances, and study Bibles to help you understand the text and apply its teachings to your life.
Practice Gratitude
Gratitude is an important aspect of sustaining your relationship with the Holy Spirit. When we focus on the blessings in our lives and express gratitude for them, we open ourselves up to God’s presence and His transformative power. Here are some practical ways to practice gratitude:
Start a gratitude journal: Each day, write down three things you’re grateful for. This simple practice can help shift your focus from negative to positive and increase your awareness of God’s blessings in your life.
Express gratitude to others: Take time to express gratitude to the people in your life who have made a positive impact on you. This can be as simple as sending a text or writing a note to let them know you appreciate them.
Give back to others: Serving others is a powerful way to express gratitude and connect with God’s heart for His people. Consider volunteering at a local charity or church, or finding other ways to give back to your community.
Embrace the Journey of Welcoming the Spirit
Finally, it’s important to remember that sustaining your relationship with the Holy Spirit is a journey, not a destination—especially when it comes to navigating a life of brokenness in light of the Kingdom.
There will be ups and downs along the way, but as long as you stay committed to your relationship with God, He will be faithful to guide you and sustain you. Embrace the journey and trust in His plan for your life.
Welcoming the Holy Spirit into your life is one of the most important steps you can take towards deepening your relationship with God and experiencing His transformative power.
